Are You Israel? Which One, Northern or Southern?

First of all, let me put this disclaimer out there.

1. I have never walked on water (unless you consider being pulled by a 70 horse Johnson boat motor), raised up a dead person or even made water into wine (believe me, I would if I could!).

2. The Walk Brenda and I are on now is OUR Walk. You have your own Walk. Unless HaShem (G-d, Yehovah, the Father, etc) tells you in your “knower of knowers”, don’t follow us in our Walk. We are NOT here to proselytize. We are in a process of converting to Judaism through the guidance of our elder, Adon Gabriel Hunnicutt.

3. The following is an explanation of our Walk. If you disagree on certain points or conclusions, please, let me know in the comments section.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

There are other verses and stories in the Tanak that support it but for now this is sufficient to let you know I am a believer in the 2 house scenario posited by so many in the Hebrew Roots movement … Eddie Chumney, Brad Scott, Rico Cortes to name a few.

So if you look at this verse you have to disseminate who is Israel and who is Judah?

Here we go to 2 Chronicles Chapter 11 …

2Ch 11:16 And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers.

This is a verse that’s talking about someone that  set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel .  Who are these people? the answer is earlier in the chapter.

2Ch 11:1 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.

Ok, Rehoboam gathered Judah and Benjamin. Judah and Benjamin are the southern tribes which stayed in Jerusalem.

Go back to Chapter 10 ….

2Ch 10:15 So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
2Ch 10:16 And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
2Ch 10:17 But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
2Ch 10:18 Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
2Ch 10:19 And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

Did you catch that? The Israel that rebelled against the house of David is the Northern kingdom! Rehoboam ruled over the southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin!

In verse 17 Rehoboam is reigning over the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, but in verses 15 and 16 we have rebellion against  Rehoboam and the House of David! They stoned Rehoboam’s emissary Hadoram to death and would have done the same to him had he not fled (vs. 18); now we have the 2 houses established.

1. The children of Israel that were obedient to Rehoboam. The Southern Kingdom consisting mainly of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. These people kept worshipping at the Temple in Jerusalem according to the Torah.

2. The children of Israel that rebelled and went north. The Northern Kingdom that set up their own houses of worship and times for worship. Their own  PRIESTS!

2Ch 11:14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest’s office unto the LORD:

It is interesting to note that in the very next chapter, Rehoboam gathered an army together but Hashem stopped him.

I

2Ch 11:1 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.
2Ch 11:2 But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
2Ch 11:3 Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying,
2Ch 11:4 Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the LORD, and returned from going against Jeroboam.

Shemaiah was Rehoboam’s prophet much like Samuel was to King David.

So, we have a rebellious northern kingdom and Rehoboam set to go after them but HaShem stops him.

I think this would be a good time to interject some definitions.

Rehoboam means in Hebrew ” a people has enlarged” H7346 Strong’s

Jeroboam means in Hebrew “(the) people will contend” H3379 Strong’s

I hear Messianics (Hebrew Roots) people all the time saying, “We are Israel! We follow Torah! We don’t follow Rabbis! We’ve been fooled by men before and it’s not going to happen again!  This all sounds so good and righteous. They are correct. They are Israel. Northern Israel.

I want to take you to this verse now:

2Ch 11:14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest’s office unto the LORD:

What is this saying? Pretty simple.  The legitimate Levites or Priests left all they owned and went back to Judah because Jeroboam had threw them out and instituted his OWN priests! So, there were NO legitimate Levites or Torah ordained Priests left in the Northern Kingdom. Just those appointed by MEN!

In summary, I want to repeat 2 Chronicles  …

2Ch 11:16 And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers.

Brenda and I set our hearts to seek the LORD God of Isreal.  From Cornerstone Church in Borger to Biblishe Gemiende in Germany to Hebrew Roots teachings till now, we have prayed to Yeshua to lead us to the LORD God of Israel.

He has led us on this path. We are being taught by a loving Rabbi, Rabbi Dr. Yosef ben Haggai, who is currently in Australia. We have fellowship with his talmudim in Washington state and Tennessee. One of which, Rabbi Gregg Killian has an excellent website, called “The Watchman”. May Hashem watch over you in your journey and may we all have shalom in our lives.
